Insanely cool eye-tracking technology shows exactly what F1 drivers look at

Strap into Nico Hulkenberg’s Force India race car and learn from a master

If you’ve ever wondered what a Formula One driver looks at while they’re racing, wonder no more. Using special eye-tracking goggles, Sahara Force India and Nico Hulkenberg have created a video that shows exactly where this particular F1 driver trains his eyes while going around a track.

As it turns out, Formula One drivers are a bit more capable than the average Joe when it comes to reaction times and the ability to take in and comprehend information. Going into corners, Hulkenberg is zeroed in on the apex, trying to clip the curb at just the right point. He reacts to the changing of the lights at a speed so fast, the same time would suggest a false start by a runner in a sprint.

The eye-tracking technology shows that the human eye tends to dart around quite a bit, too. It doesn’t stay focused on any one thing for too long, and our peripheral vision fills in most of what we don’t look directly at.

Take it all in and use it to improve your skills during your next autocross outing or track day.
